The Red Comet is one of many names given to the blood-red celestial object spotted once more in Westeros, 107 years after its last sighting. This time, it was accompanied by a meteor shower.

Appearance[]

The comet is red, with a long tail that to some appears to cover half the sky. It is visible by day and outshines the moon at night. Some have described it as blood red, crimson, or scarlet.

Of the meteors, no descriptions have yet been made.

Significance[]

Though the maesters still hold information on the last time the comet was seen, including the significance some figures of the period ascribed to it, there is as of yet no solidified marker as to what meaning the object might have.

Some mark it as an omen of doom and war, others as a marker of renewed Targaryen supremacy. Some see the comet as a herald of great change, and a shifting of dynasties and empires. Yet others see it as a time of magic, when fire and blood and spellwork reign supreme. There is no universal agreement upon what the portent could mean.

Meteors[]

When the comet first arrived, it was accompanied by a meteor shower that covered the whole of Westeros and indeed parts of the Free Cities, though in the Seven Kingdoms the regions most affected were the North, Vale, Westerlands, and Riverlands. While hundreds of small impacts have been discovered, and scores of miniature asteroids have been retrieved from them, none have as of yet provided anything of significant value.

In the mountains between the Westerlands and the Riverlands, however, there have been dozens of stories of massive, flaming orbs falling from the sky - far larger than have been found elsewhere upon the continent.
